‘Dinner & Discussion’ builds community through elevated conversations
One Friday per month, Idaho Baha’is Barbara Whitbeck and Joyce Boykin invite their local friends to “Dinner & Discussion.” Whitbeck learned of a similar discussion group in Wyoming in 2024 and contacted its host to learn more. She says it was “a great way to hold elevated conversations and increase our involvement in community building.” The topic and several discussion questions are included with the invitation. Attendees are also invited to an ongoing potluck and fireside in the neighborhood, and many participate.
Within the last year, more than 60 have participated, with as many as 20 a month. Most evenings, the majority of participants are friends of the Faith community. A format including spiritual quotes, a stated purpose, and ground rules for discussion ensures a fruitful space. The meetings have also led to social action, with a discussion on homelessness leading participants to volunteer in a soup kitchen and food pantry.
Whitbeck and Boykin consult to select topics. Whitbeck explains, “I am quieter and have computer and research skills. Joyce has the type of energy to hand out invitations in the neighborhood and meet strangers.
Our different personalities work well together.” As part of the reflection process, they ask participants why they return to the space. Answers include: “good company,” a “chance for conversations that make a difference,” an atmosphere where people “can freely and safely express ourselves,” and the opportunity of “making new friends.”
