Why Baha'i

Alvin Bitsilly
Mexican Springs, N.M.
Baha'i since 1991

Before discovering the Baha'i Faith in the late '80s, I was into drugs and alcohol and living a real trashy life. I had just started to try to get my life together.

I didn’t feel I could turn to Christianity, which is how I was raised. Actually, my family were “religion Gypsies”: We bounced around from Catholicism to Pentecostal to Baptist, etc. I didn’t connect with any of them.

Then I met Jo Ann, my future wife, in a jewelry store. We started dating. I guess she could see I was a nice guy when I wasn’t around substances. She was a member of the Baha'i Faith, which I had never heard of.

Jo Ann, an Anglo, answered my questions about the Faith. She suggested I also investigate the religion on my own, which I did for several years. I liked what I found and was relieved that no Bahai's told me I was going to Hell.

I had been told by most Christians that if you weren't "saved" in their beliefs, you were going to burn in Hell forever. For the Navajos, there is no such thing. Why would God create something so beautiful and have it sent to a place to burn?

When Jo Ann and I decided to get married we had planned to have a Baha'i and a Christian wedding. There was no problem arranging a Baha'i wedding, but no Christian ministers would marry us. One said that I was "saved," but  that Jo Ann was "in the dark" because she was a Baha'i.

This minister predicted that the best that we could ever have was a "gray" life together. Little did he know that after 23 years, we have a wonderful life filled with the light of Baha'u'llah.

Seven years after we married, I went with three Baha'is on a week-long retreat designed to enrich our understanding of the Baha'i Faith. My wife couldn't attend. On the last day of the retreat, we had to put on a play. I was a bird with a broken wing. One of the Baha'is had to fix my wing. The first thing that came to mind was the prayer revealed to the Baha'is of the Western States:

O God!  O God!  This is a broken-winged bird and his flight is very slow—assist him so that he may fly toward the apex of prosperity and salvation, wing his way with the utmost joy and happiness throughout the illimitable space, raise his melody in Thy Supreme Name in all the regions, exhilarate the ears with this call, and brighten the eyes by beholding the signs of guidance.

O Lord!  I am single, alone and lowly.  For me there is no support save Thee, no helper except Thee and no sustainer beside Thee.  Confirm me in Thy service, assist me with the cohorts of Thy angels, make me victorious in the promotion of Thy Word and suffer me to speak out Thy wisdom amongst Thy creatures.  Verily, Thou art the helper of the weak and the defender of the little ones, and verily Thou art the Powerful, the Mighty and the Unconstrained.

I knew I was the broken-winged bird and that I was ready to become a Baha'i. I didn't tell Jo Ann until two days later that I had joined the Faith. A few months later, my Uncle Wilsie, a Navajo code talker in World War II, became a Baha'i at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque, N.M.

Last year, at the commemoration of Abdu'l-Baha's 1912 visit to Glenwood Springs in Colorado, my sister Victoria and her son Corey also became Baha'is. My sister said she couldn't get this kind of love from any other religion.

Our families are the only Baha'is in Mexican Springs. Lately, we have been having prayer gatherings and study circles with Baha'is, some who live as far as 60 miles away.

Being a Baha'i has lit up my life. It has made me want to learn more about my culture, the Navajo. It turns out the Navajo culture and the Baha'i Faith share important similarities. Both emphasize being of service to others, treating people equally and being in harmony with the Creator.

Being a Baha'i has also made me more involved with family members. I attend traditional Navajo ceremonies to be of service to the hosting families. At the same time, I'm very involved with the Baha'i Faith.

I teach computer skills at our local elementary school and officiate at basketball, football and softball games. Becoming a Baha'i has helped me be more patient with people and be a better role model to the children at the school and to my children, Ty and Kyla.

If someone is feeling sad, there’s a Baha'i prayer for that. If someone is hurting or in pain, there are prayers to nurture them through that pain. There are prayers for everything.

Most of all, being a Baha'i has helped me understand why my life is important and that Baha'u'llah, along with my great-grandparents and grandparents, are watching over me and helping me share Baha'u'llah's message.

I loved hearing your story.

I loved hearing your story. The idea of the Saved and the Sinners has been done away with in the Bahai Faith. All are the recipients of Gods Love. The fact that you could hang around Bahai's for years and not be made to feel 'less than' because you weren't a Bahai, warms my heart. My husband is not a seeker, but he is a friend of the Faith and is always treated with respect. He recently accompanied me on my Pilgrimage. The joy you feel shows in your letter. Thank you for sharing. Much Bahai' Love, Chris Dobbins

thank you

thank you for sharing your story. I loved it! it made me remember why i decided to become Baha'i. Gracias!

I enjoyed reading this story. It gave me encouragement in so many ways. Erica Spencer-VanDever Youth Program Coordinator NABI

Could you explain "Bahai" heaven and hell please.

I watched a video that stated heaven is being near God and hell is being distant from God. How is that different than hell or heaven in Christianity?

I respect you very much

I respect you very much sir,but if you don't mind me making a few comments. First of all there is a heaven and hell, but God didn't create us humans for hell and He does not desire to send us there! So He doesn't wish we would all go there and burn. It tells us in the Bible that hell was created for the devil and his angels NOT for us."Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels."(MATT. 25:41)ANd He wishes that all people would come to repentance and be saved."The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."(II Peter 3:9)He doesn't take joy in seeing people go to hell. God is love. But He is also just. We were created perfect, but out of the free will God gave us we sinned against Him. Sin seperates us from God. After all how could a sinful person be in the presence of a Holy God. For years God would make the people sacrifice animals to atone for their sins, but the blood of animals could not take the sin away. But here is the best part of all God sent His only Son Jesus, which is God Himself in the flesh, to die for our sins. The blood of animals wasn't enough, but Christs blood was enough! Ok imagine you have to make a choice. Say that someone asks you if you were to send any of your children to hell who would it be? Of course you wouldn't want any of them to go! But the punishment must be paid for! This would break your heart wouldn't it, thinking that one of your children would go to hell. So what would you do, you would beg the punishment be put on you so your child wouldn't have to go there. This is exactly what Christ did! He couldn't bear the broken fellowship between God and man and He did not want to send people to hell so He took our sin upon Himself. He died and rose again and intercedes for us! We have a way through Him and only Him to heaven. Sir you don't have to rely on works or head knowledge to get you there because we are not perfect and can never know it all."For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard.Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins. For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us. God was being entirely fair and just when he did not punish those who sinned in former times."(Romans 3:23-25)"It is the same today, for not all the Jews have turned away from God. A few [fn] are being saved as a result of God's kindness in choosing them. And if they are saved by God's kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God's wonderful kindness would not be what it really is--free and undeserved."(Romans11:5-6)All you have to do is trust in Jesus and in His death to make you right with God. All one has to do is confess with his mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in there heart that God raised Him from the dead. It says in the Bible that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. He loves you! He desires to save you! please let Him. This gift of salvation is free,no works added. And the best part is is that you can be fully assured that you will go to heaven when you die!! Because whoever has the Son has life, and God loved the world so much that He gave Jesus for us and that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. The Bible is proof that what I am telling you is true. And sir the Bible is true it is historically proven so we don't just guess about it. I love you and so does He. I pray that you will become saved and that I will see you and your whole family in heaven someday."For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us,"Anyone who believes in him will not be disappointed. [fn]" Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They all have the same Lord, who generously gives his riches to all who ask for them. For "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." [fn](Romans 10:9-13)

I am a Baha"i and I agree

I am a Baha"i and I agree with everything that the christain person said. The Baha'i beleif is similar, we believe that Jesus was the son of God and died for our sins.[I do not profess to speak for all Baha'is] The only thing I find myself differing with is the statement that "we have a way through him[so far so good], and only him to heaven" Jesus was exactly who he said he was, but so was all the divine messengers. If there is only one God the God of all, who was lying; Moses; the friend of God; Budda, the Enlightened One;Mohamed,The seal of the Prophets;Baha'u'llah,The Glory of God; or the founders of the other great world religions? They all claimed prophethood and " Through their fruits shall ye know them". Peace to all. Bill

Not Bahai but I agree with Bill

Peace Bill...and thanks for your comment. I was just having this very type of conversation with my son. If we take the Christian view of salvation then most of the world (being non-Christian) is doomed to burn in hell. I cannot accept that God would allow his children to go to hell for belief or non-belief.

Christian

Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the only way to Heaven...................

The only Way...

I agree with our Christian friend. Christ was the "only way". So was Moses, Budha,Chrishna, Mohamad, and Baha'u'llah. If we study the scriptures of other religions we find similar claim and statement, Because it was God who spoke through them all. God loves all humanity for all time, and therefore, He never left us alone without His guidance and a path to know Him. With that knowledge I can say that I am also a Christian, Jew, Moslem, and a Baha'i. Blessing

the navajo desperatly need

the navajo desperatly need someone with a caring heart. most people will not automatically admite they are wrong. fact, i didnt myself. i studied verious religions and inside i knew it was a testomony in itself. i knew i was wrong that i had went against God's perfect Word. when i was pregnant God found me. he made me face myself. see sometimes people buy the mirrors that dont truly portray what they look like. but its when you get that true reflection your like your like hey i need to change things. Lord Jesus Christ knew before He created man He would have to die for them. It was for the joy that was set before Him He endured the cross. So that we can admite- i am a sinner, Christ died for me I accept that. i know hell is real and i know heaven is too. and if you dont admite you are a sinner whether you want to or not eventually you will see your true reflection. you will go to hell for your sins. im not trying to hurt your feelings. im trying to warn you. hell is verry real. and Jesus return is not fare off.

a relationship with CHRIST....

JESUS CHRIST is the only way to heaven. GOD said my children die from lack of knowledge.if you believe hell is real then you must believe satan is also. why do you think he is called the father of lies? most of these so called prophets are not prophets at all. satan can only mimic what GOD does. why do you think GOD chose the Jews as his people. it wasn't because they were somehow special. GOD see us all as special. he chose them to reveal himself. the laws were revealed to the JEWS first. the prophets came through the JEWS. the daily sacrifice for the remission of sins. the promised messiah came from the JEWS. that would be JESUS. their were 318 prophecies concerning the coming messiah. JESUS fulfilled everyone of them.the odds of fulfilling just 8 are like 10/120 power. a mathematician will say those odds are impossible unless your GOD.now that we have established that JESUS is who he says he is. he is GOD in the flesh. if you don't understand the trinity. picture marriage. you became one. JESUS said "no one is coming after me". he also said that there would be false prophets.satan is a master of deception.he even used Moses,Abraham and a few others. but as soon as one that claims to be a prophet and comes after JESUS it is a dead give away to be a false prophet. I would recommend that a good book to read is "a case for CHRIST" it is about a guy that was a atheist.his wife became a CHRISTIAN. he was a investigative reporter for a Chicago news paper. he thought he would investigate this CHRISTIAN thing over the weekend and his wife would come to her senses by monday morning. well, about 2 yrs later and a lot of investigating he gave his life to CHRIST. I heard his testimony and he approached this with a attitude of i am going to disprove all this so called evidence. he went from devout atheist to true CHRISTIAN.I know there is a lot of information out there and it can be confusing and even frustrating to sort through it all. but don't just settle for something that sounds good. GOD will reveal himself to you and lead you on the right path. that path is narrow. narrow is the path that leads to eternal life and few find it. if or when you find it you will quickly realize that many are perishing apart from GOD.many people believe that they are getting into heaven because they are nice or do good deeds. we all have a sin debt. born with a sin nature. GOD is not going to weigh out your good deeds against your sins.a human judge doesn't even do that. does a cop consider how you drove before he pulled you over. GOD has been warning us that the day of judgment is coming. if JESUS would have committed 1 sin he would not have been resurrected. do you think GOD will hold us to a lesser standard. we can only stand before GOD in perfection. only when we exchange our unrighteous for CHRIST righteous can that happen.

Young baha'i

I came to this site to get clearification and i did. I grew up in a bahai home until the end of my 15th year. On my 15th birthday i became a bahai and honestly was confussed. I became a bahai because that was what i felt was expected by me, but had no true meaning of what the faith is about. I am currently 17 and never been so clear and motivated by the faith in my life. Since the age of 13 ive been in and out of foster homes and have got alot of criticism over the faith. Up until now i have always felt bad only because i havent been well educated about the faith. Just as this page has many different views and beliefs is how my everyday life are the same. I am currently in a home where church is attended almost every sunday but im never forced to go. Ive been to church many times since ive been away from home and never felt comfortable.because its mostly said if your not a christian or not saved your not a good person and going to hell. I believe in GOD, bahaullah and jesus so why am i such a bad person??
