Stitch in nines serves spiritual purpose

The number nine has been kind to Gene Saunders, aka Crochet Dad. Handy with a hook, his nine-pointed afghans and “lapghans” and his hats with nine cables, have brought him a modicum of fame and a smidgen of fortune (if you loosely define the word).

Baha'is use the number nine, the largest single-digit number, as a symbol of unity and of their Faith. Mr. Saunders, a Baha'i, says using the number nine motif “helps me connect more with the Faith. I think about being a Baha'i and what it means while I’m crocheting.”

Mr. Saunders and his wife, Lorraine, also a Baha'i, are used to all the gender jokes, the mock and real teasing, the smirk behind the hand. None of it bothers them a bit, hence Mr. Saunders’ online “handle”: Crochet Dad

Looking for a creative outlet in the early ‘80s, Mr. Saunders, remembered that he knew how to crochet; his grandmother had taught him when he was about 10. He found some yarn and a hook and started turning out caps, lap warmers and the like.

Mr. Saunders, 66, a retired computer analyst, joined online crochet groups for ideas. Eventually, “The computing part of my brain got me to create my own patterns. But they have to be perfect,” he says, referring to a quote from the Baha'i writings: “In everything we do we should always try to attain a standard of excellence.”

As his inventory grew, so did demand, especially from Baha'is, for his patterns and products.

His daughters Cambria, Ciera, Tracey and Karen, his son, Christopher, and his three grandchildren have been recipients of his handmade gifts. Crocheting for them, Mr. Saunders says, “makes me feel closer to them.”

Mr. Saunders’ crocheted items have yielded other rewards. He won first place this year for a nine-cabled hat at the San Diego County Fair, which he has been attending since a child. He also came in second in a crochet speed contest, second place for a hat made from recycled plastic shopping bags and third place for his nine-pointed star afghan in the afghan/lapghan, entrant 62 and over.

And not a granny square among them.

another crochet dad

I didn't think I was the only male Baha'i to do needlecrafts. I'm so glad to read about Gene and his 9-point projects. I've been an aficionado of knitting, crocheting, even tatting since my teens - I'm now also 62. Back in the 70's, I tatted 9-point stars for friends who were jewelers to use as lost-wax molds for lacy pendants. Maybe Gene and I can exchange patterns some day, as I design most everything I do, especially in knitting. So Allah'u'Abha! from another "happy hooker!"

More!

It's great to see other craft-minded Baha'is.
Any more out there?
Maybe we should start a network group.
Any interest?

Knitting

I'm a senior cit. Bahá'í of 44-year standing as a believer in Bahá'u'lláh. I've just taken up knitting again due to the birth of twins in the extended family after a 60-some year hiatus. I made two sweaters for the new arrivals and am hooked on knitting once more. I'd love to receive any knitting patterns incorporating the nine-pointed star. I'm not experienced enough to create my own. I'm happy to pay for any pattern. Thanks so much. Allah-u-Abha! Va.

nine-cabled hat

I'm a Baha'i' of nearly 30 years standing and recently "got back into" knitting and crocheting. I would love to purchase your pattern for the nine-cabled hat....I love cables and living in upstate NY, I love hats, too! I've toyed with a nine-star pattern in quilting, but haven't gotten back into the sewing room since being abducted by my knitting needles again. Let me know about this pattern, please....Candyce Ricco riccosugartree@yahoo.com

craft network group

sounds like a great idea - i am a knitter just learning about the bahai faith. Love your lapghans in the pic - great work. would be interested in that kind of group

bahai's who crochet

Hey Gene, I'm a Bahai who crochets. No granny squares for me. I've always wanted to crochet Bahai inspired stuff. I mostly use thread. A group of Bahai crocheters would be really inspiring to be a part of. Happy hooking, Missy Meakin Oroville, CA

I've been looking for something to do when I'm watching TV...this is it. Now to learn how to crochet...

Hi I just ordered the

Hi I just ordered the 9-pointed star pattern for my husband who also crochets. Thanks for devising it. Cher

Congratulations

Dear Gene, I think it's great that you don't let the silly standards of today deter you from doing something you enjoy. Especially that you don't let people's ignorant jokes affect you. To me, that is reflects a very high standard of integrity. I love it when men are not afraid of doing something that women used to do. That shows we are advancing towards spiritual maturity. Keep up the good work! You are teaching about spiritual equality between men and woman just by your actions. A tremendous gift to mankind, in addition to your beautiful art work. Do you have a web page with photos of everything you've done? It would be great to see! Lorraine Manifold Park Ridge, IL

Wonderful Response!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments.

If you want to see more of my crochet, I have a Flickr page where I keep some pictures.

I finally got around to creating a blog where I also have pictures and try to keep my new projects listed. From my blog, you can access my patterns and finished projects.

sharing

Beautiful! Suggest you share this aspect of glorifying the Greatest Name with the world via Baha'i Announce. This kind of work could become an activity in other countries leading to the economic advancement of peoples everywhere. -- do you sell your productions? patterns?

Thanks for the pattern

I went to your website and downloaded the free pattern for the nine-pointed star. I'm looking forward to doing a few small ones up to give to new friends this weekend at the Atlanta Conference.

I have the nine pointed star

I have the nine pointed star pattern from Crochet Dad. I love making this afghan/lapghan! I think a Baha'i craft/artist group would be great! I am a long standing Baha'i, declaring 50 years ago, my mother was a Baha'i, and also my grandmother, who declared her love of Baha'u'llah in 1914 in Muskegon, MI.

Calendar

Missy, I liked your version of the Bahai calendar that began the week with Saturday. Do you have one for 165 BE that I could see? Jrix

nine pointed star quilt pattern

Does anyone have a nine-pointed star quilt pattern? I saw it mentioned here, but was not sure if anyone had actually created a template. If so, can anyone share it? My son just finished his year of service and I have fabric to make him a quilt and would love to incorporate a nine-pointed star as the center block.

nine pointed star

I'm not aware of a nine-pointed star quilt pattern but you may wish to try using three triangles positioned in such a way as to make a 9-pointed star. Good luck! (What a wonderful gift for you son.)

9-pointed star

Hi Gene: As a 40yr. Baha'i, I've knitted, crocheted and quilted. My passion is quilting Baha'i Prayer Book bags for Fund raisers. They're lined and fit the size of our prayer book. They take 45 minutes to make, have a Persian motif and are a big hit.

9 point quilt

It may not sound as 'spiritual' as we Bahai's would like to think however I find great Beauty in 9 point crop circles and wonder about using them as patterns for quilting.. How about one big nine point star (Crop circle) in the middle of a queen sized bed?? Look online for 9 point crop circles... Within a previous home my daughter designed a nine point star to be tiled into the entrance. A child and I placed huge watercolor paper over it and traced the star, then we watercolored the inside. I placed faces in the very center...(remember the billboard of children's faces saying *There is no room in their future for Prejudice* ..That photo. All around the edges we wrote every virture listed in The Virtues Guide (Popoff) We then cut a gift bag of holographic stars out, pasting them in the negative space of this large poster. I hope I've given you some ideas for Bahai nine point quilts... Warm Bahai Greetings Sandra from Saskatchewan Canada
