Gender Equality & Advancement of Women

The progress of humankind depends upon the full and equal participation of women in all spheres of life.

"When...the equality of men and women be realized, the foundations of war will be utterly destroyed." -The Baha'i Writings

Our Vision

Exploring Equality

Guided by the belief that the equality of women and men is not only a desirable social condition but a spiritual truth, our Office has collaborated for over 35 years with a wide range of civil society organizations and U.S. government agencies to promote gender equality and the advancement of women.

This critical work includes supporting efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls, to advance the meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding and rethink prevailing conceptions of human security, power and leadership. Men are actively engaged as critical partners in this work, with the understanding that, “As long as women are prevented from attaining their highest possibilities, so long will men be unable to achieve the greatness which might be theirs.”

Our Officers serve in leadership capacities on coalitions and working groups, host and facilitate discussions engaging diverse participants and perspectives, and contribute content to various forums to advance public discourse and collective action in a number areas. We aim in all our efforts to collaborate with others in a spirit of learning, to facilitate thoughtful dialogue, and to contribute to the evolution of public opinion and policy

Our Work

Women, Peace and Security

Our Office is an active member of the U.S. Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace and Security and hosts a monthly discussion series drawing on diverse perspectives in the field. The series offers an opportunity for deeper reflection on the ideas and practices informing efforts to advance women's meaningful participation in building and sustaining peace at home and abroad. The group also engages in examination of prevailing conceptions of peace, security and the role of gender equality in advancing conditions of collective thriving.
