Ghodsieh Ashraf: One of the First Iranian Women to Pursue Higher Education in the West

In observance of Women’s History Month, we pay tribute to Ghodsieh Ashraf (1889-1976), a Baha’i who was one of the first Iranian women to have obtained a university degree in America. Ms. Ashraf was a philanthropist and an initiator and organizer of numerous educational and health projects, mainly for women and children.

She was attending the Lewis Institute in Chicago in 1912 when ‘Abdu’l-Baha, the leader of the Faith at the time, visited this country. This photo of ‘Abdu’l-Baha (in the center) with a group of Baha’is in Chicago, shows Ms. Ashraf to his right (wearing a headscarf).

I remember reading about this young lady when I was researching a book about my great grandfather Joseph Hannen who was instrumental in bringing her to America. He was secretary of the Persian American Educational Society at the time. A very brave young woman I would say!

Hi Judy, It’s so interesting that your grandfather played a role in this history.
Wonderful. I’m going to look up your grandfather as I’m very interested to learn more.
      Thank you for sharing.

  2. Ms. Ashraf was indeed an inspiration for all women in Iran and even beyond the borders. She proved that education is the most important factor which paves the way to a successful future. She continues to live through what she has left behind.
